A special flag.

Watching the national flags that elegantly decorate the Grand Stand, there is one that looks rather unfamiliar. A green field with an impressive shield divided into four quarters. Closer examination, and a bit of research, learns that it represents the four traditional provinces of the Irish Island (Ulster, Munster, Leinster and Connacht) thus covering both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Although no official single Irish cross-border flag exists, many sports organisations as well as cultural organisations use special flags to show that they associate and represent all islanders. The Irish Hockey Association has chosen for the flag that now proudly waves over the tournament pitch. Other Irish sports organisations use different flags. The Gaelic Athletic Association and the Irish Rugby Football Union have flags that bear similarities to the hockey flag. The Irish cricket team, however, uses a flag depicting shamrocks to show its dedication to represent "One Island".
